Korean Players Both Score to Guide Mainz Past Freiburg

Park Joo-ho and Koo Ja-cheol both scored on Friday to steer Mainz 05 to a 2-0 victory over SC Freiburg in their Bundesliga match played at home in the Coface Arena.

Park's shot was unwittingly deflected into the net by one of Freiburg's defenders in the 24th minute, handing the Korean his first Bundesliga goal since he transferred to Mainz from Swiss outfit Basel in July.

Koo replaced attacking midfielder Yunus Malli in the 58th and curled in a free kick by Johannes Geis to seal the win in the 86th.

Koo and Park both bowed to fans in celebration, paying reference to the Korean tradition of prostrating oneself before one's elders on lunar New Year's Day.

Koo had a tough first half of the season at Wolfsburg as he was unable to gain much playing time, but his move to Mainz may have signaled a change of fortune.
