Standstill Order to Curb Spread of Bird Flu

The agriculture ministry has issued a standstill order for poultry transports in Daejeon as well as Gyeonggi and Chungcheong provinces on Monday to prevent the further spread of bird flu.

This restricts movement of poultry as well as people and vehicles to and from poultry farms from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m.

The H5N8 virus was first detected in ducks in North Jeolla Province on Jan. 17 and spread across the country over the weekend.

On Sunday the virus was found in chickens that died at a farm in Buyeo, South Chungcheong Province.

Additional cases were reported at duck farms in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, and Haenam, South Jeolla Province.

The government decided to cull 1.75 million chickens and ducks at 42 farms within a 3 km radius of the sites where suspicion of H5N8 has been reported. As of Sunday, 488,000 chickens and ducks were culled.
