Alarmed customer continue to cancel their credit cards after a massive data leak from three credit-card companies, despite government assurances that their information is now safe.
As of 6 p.m. on Thursday, 1.74 million credit card cancellation requests were submitted to Kookmin, Lotte, and Nonghyup.
Another 2.18 million requested new cards.
The three companies are dealing with more than 1 million cancellation or re-issue requests per day.
On Tuesday, the firms started to inform individual customers by email or post of whether their personal data were leaked or not. This is likely to spur more requests from people who had somehow missed the news.
