Koo Ja-cheol signed a four-year deal with FSV Mainz in the Bundesliga on Saturday. The transfer fee is reportedly 5 million euros, far higher than the club's previous record of 3 million euros.
Koo has been playing in Germany since he signed for Wolfsburg in January 2011. After failing to establish himself as a key player for the club, he was loaned to FC Augsburg in January the following year. He played a significant role in helping the team avoid relegation and returned to Wolfsburg in July 2013.
However, he again struggled to cement his position in the team, and matters were made worse last October when he sustained an ankle injury in an international fixture against African side Mali.
Koo's future now looks brighter as Mainz coach Tomas Tuchel sees much potential in the attacking midfielder. He will wear the club’s No. 13 jersey.
