This winter's first cold weather advisory was issued for Seoul and other areas as morning's low in Seoul was forecast to drop to -9 degrees Celsius on Thursday.
The warning was issued for Seoul and some parts in Gyeonggi Province and Incheon, mountainous regions in Gangwon Province, Cheongwon in North Chungcheong Province, and Jinan in North Jeolla Province.
The Korea Meteorological Administration said the cold snap is due to the expansion of a cold continental anticyclone.
A cold weather advisory is issued when the morning’s low is expected to be lower than 3 degrees Celsius and more than 10 degrees lower than the previous day, or when the temperature is expected to fall more than 3 degrees below the average temperature in previous years.
Temperatures in Seoul will hover below zero all day Thursday. They will likely drop below -10 degrees in some regions in Gangwon and Gyeonggi Provinces.
The KMA also forecast a lot of snow in mountainous parts of Jeju (about 10 to 40 cm) and eastern Gangwon Province (3 to 8 cm).
