"Doors & Rooms," the latest version of the hit mobile phone game by Gameday, a Korean game app developer, has been downloaded over 10 million times worldwide since it was released on Aug. 23.
Previous versions were hugely popular among gamers in Korea, but few anticipated the astonishing rate at which the newest edition has taken the world by storm.
It was launched globally in November last year and started gaining traction first in Korea and Japan. Within just four days, it had claimed the top spot among all mobile games on Apple's App Store in the two countries. It subsequently achieved the same feat in Australia, Britain and Russia. Two weeks after its release, it topped the list in the U.S. and was the second-most-downloaded free mobile game.
The app continued to spread like wildfire across Africa and South America and now ranks as the most downloaded mobile game in Apple's App Store in 51 countries.
Gameday executive Lee Chang-yun said, "The most important factor in its success is probably the fact that the game was designed to be easily accessible to people who are not habitual gamers. It also has fun features that quickly hook users. Another factor would be the company's efforts to monitor users' reviews and reflect their feedback quickly."
The game engages users mentally by relying on their wits to escape a series of rooms as they have to figure out all the clues in time. It is available in multiple languages.
