Hyundai Motor has joined hands with Delphi Automotive to develop a gasoline engine that may improve fuel economy by 25 percent compared to its rivals, according to Automotive News on Friday.

Delphi is a multinational car parts manufacturer headquartered in Troy, Michigan.

The 1.8-liter gasoline direct compression ignition (GDCI) engine reportedly outperforms 2.0-liter diesel engines in terms of both power and gas mileage.

Hyundai plans to install it in the new Sonata to test its performance before mass-producing it. The model will be released next year. The new engine is expected to improve the car's fuel efficiency from 11.9 km/l to 14.9 km/l.
