There have been some mixed signals from the job market recently as the number of new job openings rose for the fifth consecutive month in October, while unemployment also climbed among young jobseekers.

Statistics Korea said the new jobs were mostly for those aged 50 and over, bringing the total number of employed to 26 million last month. That marks a rise of almost 2 percent from a year earlier, and is the biggest jump in 13 months.

The jobless rate for people aged 15 to 29 stood at 7.8 percent, almost three times the overall unemployment rate of 2.8 percent.
