The U.S. government is pressuring Korea to further open up its beef market as Washington plans to remove its own restrictions on European beef imports.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture revised its beef import rules earlier this month and they will take effect from February, based on guidelines set by the World Organization for Animal Health.
This move may compel Washington to put pressure on Seoul to curb its restrictions on U.S. beef imports.
Korea only imports U.S. beef produced from cattle under 30 months' old due to an earlier scare about mad cow disease.
