Footballer Lee Young-pyo of Vancouver Whitecaps has announced his retirement.
The club announced on its website Tuesday that Lee will retire at the end of the 2013 Major League Soccer season.
The Whitecaps did not make it to the playoffs, so the team's last game of the season will be against the Colorado Rapids on Oct. 28, which Lee said will be "the most memorable game in my life."
Lee was quoted as saying, "I learned so many things throughout my career, much more than I had expected when I was young."
During his 14-year professional career, Lee was a leading left back for the Korean national team. "I have been playing soccer for the last 28 years, so I think it's the time to stop," said Lee. "I'm so happy to retire with a great team [Whitecaps] and great people. I owe thanks to everybody."
Lee will stay in Vancouver to study sports marketing.
