Apple unveiled the latest iPads on Tuesday at a media event in San Francisco. The iPad Air features a 9.7-inch screen and the iPad Mini 2 a 7.9-inch display.
As its name suggests, the iPad Air is lighter than its predecessor at 0.45 kg. It is also thinner at 7.5 mm. It costs US$499 for the 16GB version and will go on sale in 41 countries on Nov. 1. Customers in Korea will have to wait longer.
The iPad Mini 2, which has higher resolution than the previous model, costs $399 for the 16GB version.
Apple is facing intense competition in the tablet market. Its share of the global tablet PC market shrank from 71 percent in early 2012 to 28 percent in the second quarter of this year.
Samsung's market share rose from 15 to 18 percent over the same period.
