LG Display has begun mass production of flexible displays for smartphones, the firm said on Monday. When folded, the six-inch OLED display measures around 1 cm at the deepest point.
The display will be adopted for flexible smartphones to be launched around next month but is not intended to be bent while in use.
Plastic has replaced glass to reduce the thickness by one-third and the weight to 7.2 g. The thinner the material, the more flexible the display. Existing models using glass are heavier and easily broken.
An LG spokesman said, "The market and technology for flexible displays are still in their infancy, but it will not take long until they will be applied to areas like mobile devices, car interiors and tablet PCs."
Market researcher HIS Displaybank projects the global market for bendable displays at US$1.5 billion in 2016 and over $10 billion by 2019.
