KakaoTalk, which dominates over 90 percent of the mobile messaging app market here, is rapidly expanding its presence in the personal computer messaging service market as well.
The PC version of the service hit the 10-million mark in download numbers on Saturday, only four months after its release in late June, Kakao said on Monday. At its current pace, Kakao is expected to overtake SK Communications' NateOn to claim the No. 1 spot in the market by the end of this year.
KakaoTalk is rapidly narrowing the gap with NateOn. Only four months ago, the latter accounted for over 80 percent of the market, but its share has since shrunk to around 60 percent. In contrast, the PC version of KakaoTalk saw its share skyrocket from a mere 2 percent to 26 percent over the same period.
