According to statistics compiled between January and June by the National Police Agency, the number of repeat DUI offenders in the country over this period neared the 20,000 mark. Some 19,845 people were each caught drunk driving on at least three occasions during this period.
The number of DUI cases generally peaks during the latter half of the year, due in part to festive holidays like Chuseok and year-end gatherings with friends and colleagues.
Judging by the current statistics, Koreans are set to break the previous year's record of 36,669 by the end of December.
The government and police say drastic measures are necessary to neutralize the trend.
