North Korea's Om Yun-chol set a new world record at the 2013 Asian Cup and Interclub Weightlifting Championship in Pyongyang on Sunday by lifting three times his own body weight.
Entering the men's 56-kg category, he managed 169 kg in clean and jerk to the previous record held by Turkish weightlifter Halil Mutlu, who hoisted 168 kg at the World Championships in Slovakia in 2001. Om also lifted 120 kg in snatch for a new combined record of 289 kg, earning him a gold medal. He also won the men's 56-kg event at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and his wife Ri Sol-ju visited the stadium on Sunday to watch the sports event. They also watched several women's events, including South Korean weightlifters Yeom Ok-jin in the 63-kg category and Jeong Ji-yeon in the 69-kg category.
An official at the South Korean Weightlifting Federation said, "Kim watched the South Korean flag being raised during the medal ceremony." Yeom and Jeong both won bronze medals.
