Osaka Mayor Defiant Over Sex Slave Gaffe

Osaka's far-right Mayor Toru Hashimoto on Thursday sent a letter seeking to rebut a resolution by the San Francisco city council denouncing his comments about World War II sex slaves for Japanese troops.

Hashimoto in May incensed critics both at home and abroad by saying the sex slaves were "necessary." The following month the San Francisco city council adopted a resolution rebuking him.

In his rebuttal, Hashimoto urged the council to retract its resolution, claiming that it is an "historical fact" that the armies of different countries used prostitutes in wartime.
