Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova is considering temporarily changing her surname to Sugarnova.
Foreign media including America's CBS Sports and Britain's The Times reported on Tuesday that she plans to file a request to that effect with the Florida Supreme Court, in the U.S. state where she currently holds residence.
Sugarpova is the brand name of the candy business she launched last August. The athlete invested US$5 million in the business and her company sold about 2 million bags of sweets last year. She apparently wants to promote the brand during the U.S. Open in New York next week using her revised name.
But it remains to be seen whether her proposed name change will actually happen. The Times said that Sharapova "asked about a 'quickie' name-change through the Supreme Court of Florida" and "would revert to Sharapova after the tournament."
