The brother-in-law of disgraced former president Chun Doo-hwan has been arrested in a continuing probe into Chun's hidden illegal assets. Prosecutors deemed Lee Chang-seok a flight risk for his role in allegedly transferring illegally obtained wealth to Chun's two sons.
Lee was arrested immediately after the Seoul Central District Court granted the warrant, the first member of Chun's family member to be held in prison since the probe began.
Chun who came to power in 1979 through a military coup illegally collected close to US$1 billion in bribes during his time in office. Since the Supreme Court in 1997 ruled that he should repay close to $200 million he has paid only about $50 million and despite living a life of luxury claims to be broke.
