The resurgent heat wave prompted a power shortage alert on Thursday for the first time in 20 days. The Korea Power Exchange said it issued a potential power shortage alert after the reserve power level fell to 4.49 million kW at 1:34 p.m.
Power shortage alerts are issued when the reserve electricity falls below 5 million kW for 20 minutes or below 4.5 million kW even for a moment. There are four levels of alert depending on severity.
"Power consumption has peaked this summer," a KPX official said. "We breathed a sigh of relief after the daytime high temperature in Seoul was three degrees lower than forecast, but the supply shortage is expected to worsen as the heat wave continues."
