The government is bracing itself for a sudden surge in power demand that is expected to reach its peak this week. As the monsoon season ends, a sweltering heat wave is to hit the nation, potentially putting its power reserves at risk.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said the power reserves during early August could plunge to an emergency level, and that the situation could continue throughout the month.
To avoid a national power crunch, the government has come up with measures to curb energy consumption. The nation's public and state-run institutions will also join the government campaign.
Private businesses have already been restricted in their energy use. The government is requiring they keep their indoor temperature at 26 degrees Celsius or higher.
