Some 60 percent of Japanese believe Korea's Dokdo belongs to Japan, according to a poll released by the Japanese government as part of a PR campaign for its colonial claim to the islets.

The Japanese Cabinet Office on Thursday said the poll was carried out among 1,784 eople, across Japan in June. Multiple answers were possible.

Altogether 94.5 percent of respondents said they know about Dokdo. Some 60.7 percent agreed that the Korean islets are Japanese territory historically and under international law, 63.1 percent said that Korea illegally occupies them, and 62 percent that they are part of Shimane Prefecture.

The survey was conducted in June by a new government agency set up by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in February to publicize Japan's territorial claims at home and abroad.
