The world's largest chipmaker Samsung Electronics and No. 2 SK Hynix on Wednesday signed a cross-licensing deal. Industry officials say the pact should save both companies trillions of won.
Rather than locking horns in costly patent disputes, the two will now be able to channel their financial resources into research and development.
They did not provide details of the contract, but the deal apparently gives them wide access to tens of thousands of each other's patented technologies.
Samsung alone has around 102,995 global patents, 35,000 of them chip-related. SK Hynix has around 21,000 patents.
