The EU is minded to link sanctions against North Korea with the renegade country's human rights abuses. So far sanctions by the EU, UN, U.S., and Japan target only proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, money laundering and other illegal activities.
The announcement was made by Joern Rohde, the head of the German Foreign Ministry’s East Asia division, at the 12th International Conference on North Korean Human Rights and Refugees in Berlin this week. The conference is sponsored by the Chosun Ilbo.
Since 2009, the EU has adopted sanctions against North Korean officials, corporations, and agencies involved in the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and amassing of illegal funds.
