The Ministry of Health and Welfare is planning to launch an investigation into wheat and flour imported from the U.S. state of Oregon.
The ministry said Friday the imported goods are made from genetically modified wheat that was not approved for planting by U.S. authorities. The ministry said it's planning to collect and recall all processed goods distributed in the domestic market.
The decision comes after the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced it had found genetically engineered wheat growing at a farm in Oregon. The U.S. said that while it is safe for human consumption, it was not approved by the government.
Korea is the largest importer of U.S. wheat and flour, with one-third of the country's wheat imports coming from Oregon.
