Koo Ja-cheol of Augsburg in Germany's Bundesliga returned to Korea on Tuesday morning full of high spirits as he looked to brighter new horizons, despite still being on the mend from an abdominal injury.
Koo, who recorded three goals and two assists for his club this season, said, "I won a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics, which was one of my goals last year, and I think I finished this season quite successfully in general. I've found myself playing in the relegation zone at the end of the last few seasons, however, so next year I'm hoping for a bigger challenge." He added that he has already received a number of offers from other Bundesliga outfits.
Koo joined Wolfsburg in 2011 and moved to Augsburg on loan in February last year. He helped the club avoid relegation to stay in the top flight with five goals and two assists in the latter half of 2012 alone. As Koo has established himself as a key player, more teams have taken an interest. Not only Wolfsburg, but also Frankfurt, Mainz and Hamburg are reportedly keen to pay for his talents.
On the national front, his bid to aid his Korean teammates qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil faltered recently due to an injury he picked up in March against Qatar, which has ruled him out of any upcoming fixtures.
"It's tough to accept because I've worked hard to rehabilitate myself from my injury, but I'm going to stay focused on getting back to full fitness and not get demoralized," he said.
Meanwhile, Koo will marry his girlfriend, a native of Jeju Island who is two years his senior, at the Walkerhill Hotel in Seoul on June 22.
