The jailed boiler-room operator Kim Kyung-joon, who rocked former President Lee Myung-bak's campaign just before the 2007 presidential election, is being treated for skin cancer.
The Justice Ministry on Wednesday said Kim was diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma around the nose in March while serving his term in the Cheonan Correctional Institution.
Since autumn last year, Kim has been receiving treatment for under his eyes in the prison hospital. He also had a tumor removed in a hospital in Cheonan.
Basal cell carcinoma is one of the three major types of skin cancer along with squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma, and usually occurs on the face. The likelihood of transition is lower than for other forms of cancers, with a high rate of full recovery.
An ministry official said Kim will undergo surgery and chemotherapy in a large hospital in Seoul soon.
