Seven out of 100 school kids in Seoul are addicted to smartphones, a survey suggests. The affliction manifests itself by anxiety if the gadgets are not to hand, and by anger and resistance if their use is banned.
The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education on Monday said it surveyed 268,183 school kids in Seoul in March and found that 17,448 or 7 percent had trouble leading a normal life due to excessive use of smartphones.
The problem is most severe among high-schoolers.
The questionnaire-based survey asked students to answer some 15 questions about the impact of smartphone use on their psychological state and their grades at school.
Those who scored 45 or more points out of a possible 60 were classified as at risk, and those with 42 to 44 points as slightly at risk. Any score over 40 suggests they use their phones excessively.
Kids in the risk group tend to interact with others mostly through their phones and have serious trouble enduring even a second without the gadget.
