Two U.S. journalists who were held for five months in a North Korean detention center in 2009 have begun a letter-writing campaign to support a fellow American citizen sentenced to 15 years of hard labor in the North.
Press reports on Saturday said Laura Ling and Euna Lee recently began a Facebook campaign to support Kenneth Bae, who was convicted of unspecified "hostile acts" against the repressive regime. Ling and Lee were freed only when former U.S. president Bill Clinton traveled to Pyongyang to negotiate their release.
Lee was quoted by the New York Daily News as saying there were entire days during her detention when she spoke no a word to another person, but letters of support she received from hundreds of strangers gave her the strength to carry on. She added, "I don't know how I could have survived every day without those letters. I think [Bae] would appreciate people letting him know that they haven't forgotten about him."
The letters were passed on by the Swedish Embassy in Pyongyang.
