A Korean college student was been sexually molested by adolescents on a bus in India, in an eerie echo of the brutal rape case that made headlines worldwide earlier this year.
The 20-year-old, who studies computer engineering there, was on her way to a flower market when the incident occurred Monday morning, the Times of India reported.
"I was the last in our group to board the bus. A gang of about 15 youth had queued up behind us. One of them groped me when I was stepping on to the floorboard. I was shocked and dazed for a few seconds," she told the paper.
The victim "then turned around to challenge the molester. But instead of relenting, he and his friends -- all 15 of them -- surrounded the girl and her companions, threatening and abusing them," the daily reported. The youth harassed her for almost an hour but no passengers came forward to help her.
At last, the victim got off the bus and reported the incident to traffic police. Police caught one of the molesters who were fleeing the scene and are trying to trace his two accomplices.
The molester who has been caught will be detained by police until April 2. The Korean Embassy called for firm punishment of the attackers.
Three foreign women have fallen victim to sexual crimes in India in the last 10 days. The other two were from Switzerland and the U.K.
In January, a Korean woman was raped there while traveling on her own.
Amid an outcry in the wake of the deadly rape case that shocked the world, the Indian Parliament last week passed a bill with harsher punishment for rapists. Under the new legislation, sexual molesters can be sentenced to up to three years of imprisonment.
