Korea clinched a crucial 2-1 victory against Qatar on Tuesday in the fifth game of the final regional qualifiers for the World Cup next year.
At the home match held at Seoul World Cup Stadium, Korea went ahead first with Lee Keun-ho's goal in the 60th minute but surrendered a goal just three minutes later to Khalfan Ibrahim, who is dubbed the Maradona of Qatar.
Son Heung-min, a star in Germany's Bundesliga, came onto the pitch at the 80th minute amid hearty cheers from the crowd and lived up to that explosive reception just before the final whistle blew.
When a shot by Lee Dong-gook bounced off the post, Son pushed it into the goal and sealed a dramatic victory in the 96th minute.
Korea is hoping to qualify for the World Cup for the eighth consecutive time. With three points from the match, the team now has 10 points with three wins, one draw and one loss, coming second in Group A behind Uzbekistan.
Korea will play against Lebanon on June 4, Uzbekistan on June 11 and Iran on June 18.
