They may well be the sports power couple of the century. PGA legend Tiger Woods announced on Monday that he is dating world champion skier Lindsey Vonn. He took the unusual step of posting on Facebook about his first relationship since divorcing a few years ago.
"This season has been great so far and I'm happy with my wins at Torrey and Doral. Something nice that's happened off the course was meeting Lindsey Vonn," he wrote.
"Lindsey and I have been friends for some time, but over the last few months, we have become very close and are now dating," Woods added. "We thank you for your support and for respecting our privacy. We want to continue our relationship, privately, as an ordinary couple and continue to compete as athletes."
Vonn also acknowledged the relationship on Facebook the same day.
"I guess it wasn't a well-kept secret. But yes, I am dating Tiger Woods. Our relationship evolved from a friendship into something more over these past few months and it has made me very happy," she said. "I don't plan on addressing this further as I would like to keep that part of my life between us, my family and close friends."
Rumors of a potential romance between them first emerged in November when the two allegedly stayed together at a ski resort in the United States. Woods also apparently visited Vonn in her home country of Austria two months ago, and when she injured her leg during the World Championships there on Feb. 5, Woods sent his private jet to transport Vonn to the United States.
Woods has a son and a daughter from his marriage to Elin Nordegren in 2004. He divorced in 2010 after a sex scandal in 2009.
Vonn married Thomas Vonn, her fellow skier and coach, in 2007 but soon after called it quits and finalized divorce proceedings last year.
