Ryu Hyun-jin of the Los Angeles Dodgers was selected as the top preseason rookie for 2013 by Baseball America on Thursday.
On the same day, he pitched three innings at an exhibition game against the Cleveland Indians during which he gave up three hits and two runs and struck out five in Goodyear Ballpark in Arizona.
Meanwhile, Ryu will likely play against the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday.
The magazine also predicted best and worst cases for each of the top 20 rookies in the list. In the best case, it wrote, "The first player to jump directly from the Korean major league to Major League Baseball, Ryu lives up to his US$36 million contract by brandishing four pitches and helping push the Dodgers past the Giants in the [National League] West."
As for the worst case, "Ryu's hefty strikeout rate (10.3 SO/9 last year) in Korea gets lost in translation or, alternately, the abundance of innings he logged at young age finally catch up with him."
