The Korean national baseball team rekindled the possibility of staying in the World Baseball Classic by beating Australia 6-0 in the second match of the first round held at Taichung Intercontinental Baseball Stadium in Taiwan on Monday.
Its fate could be determined in the final match of the round against Taiwan at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Korea suffered a shocking 0-5 defeat against the Netherlands in the round opener of Pool B.
But if Australia beats the Netherlands, Korea may advance even with a loss to Taiwan depending on score differences per inning among the three countries as they would be tied with one win and two losses. The situation is the same if the Netherlands and Korea beat Australia and Taiwan, respectively, as each team will end up with two wins and one loss.
Meanwhile in Pool A, Cuba had a convincing 12-0 victory over China in a game that ended in seven innings under the mercy rule. Cuba and Japan will both advance to the second round, which will take place in Tokyo later this week.
