Korea's trade surplus from free trade agreements last year hit roughly US$51 billion, up almost 37 percent from 2011.

The Korea Customs Service says exports to eight economic blocs including the U.S. and the EU were worth more than $227 billion in 2012. Imports from these regions stood at $176 billion.

ASEAN nations made up the largest portion of the surplus followed by the U.S. and EU. Korea's trade with FTA partners accounted for 35 percent of its entire global trade last year.
