Recovered Landfill Sees Spike in Biological Diversity

Plant and animal diversity at the recovered landfill on Nanji Island in western Seoul has more than doubled since opening in 2002, the Seoul Metropolitan Government said on Monday.

Last year, officials conducted a biological survey and found that the park was now home to 486 plant and 484 animal species.

In 2000, before the park opened, the island was home to 438 plant and animal species.

The former dump was redeveloped into a park when Korea cohosted the World Cup in 2002 and built a soccer field nearby.
