From this week, it is against the law for online businesses to collect subscribers' resident registration numbers.

The Korea Communications Commission said a revised law took effect on Monday, banning portal sites, online businesses and gaming sites from collecting too much personal information from users, in a bid to protect private data.

Online businesses will need to find other ways to identify users.

However, some credit rating agencies and banks as well as public institutions are exempt from the restriction.
