Taxi Drivers Union to Push Ahead with Planned Strike on Wednesday

Some 300,000 taxi drivers plan to strike on Wednesday after talks between their union and the government ended in failure yet again.

The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs says negotiations broke down on Monday, with taxi drivers standing firm in their demand for passage of a revised bill that would grant taxis public transportation status.

The government pushed for a new proposal instead that would increase subsidies and provide tax benefits.

Earlier, the bill met with massive protests from bus drivers who feared taxis would clog up the exclusive bus lanes if given public status.
