Many Dread Lunar New Year Holiday

Salaried workers expect to spend on average W307,000 during the Lunar New Year's holiday this year, according to an online straw poll on Monday (US$1=W1,085).

A job portal polled 1,573 employed people and found that 66.9 percent felt burdened by the extra spending during the holiday season.

They expect to spend the most money on allowances or gifts for parents (58.5 percent), followed by transportation (10.3 percent), preparing food (8.5 percent), leisure activities (5.2 percent), and gifts for relatives (4.6 percent).

Their biggest fear is that there will not be enough time to rest and enjoy the holiday since it lasts only three days including the weekend. Other worries are stress from traffic jams, preaching from family members or relatives, overeating and oversleeping, and tiring chores such as preparing food and cleaning.

A staffer at the job portal said that although one of the nation's biggest holidays is just around the corner, many salaried workers are not enjoying a festive mood but feel weighed down by the impending cost and stress.
