Park's Team Announces Gov't Revamp

The so-called transition team of president-elect Park Geun-hye on Tuesday announced a blueprint for a government revamp that would add two ministries to the lineup and shift the responsibilities of some others.

The two new ministries are the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, which was abolished by the Lee Myung-bak administration five years ago, and the Ministry of Science. Park pledged during her campaign to find new economic engines in science and technology.

The team also wants to re-establish the post of economic prime minister, which the minister of strategy and finance will concurrently hold. The move aims at empowering the minister to play a stronger role in leading the country out of the economic crisis.

Some ministries pass responsibilities to others. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade will become the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while the Knowledge Economy Ministry will be renamed Ministry of Industry, Trade and Energy. The Ministry for Education, Science and Technology will become the Ministry of Education.

The transition team is to submit the restructuring plan to the National Assembly next Monday.
