With electricity demand hitting record highs in recent weeks due to the extreme cold snap, a nationwide drill was staged Thursday morning to prepare for possible blackouts.

During the 20-minute drill, households, businesses, offices and factories complied by voluntarily turning off their lights and unplugging electrical appliances.

Subways, flights and hospitals operated as usual.
