As the Korean peninsula remains in the grips of an unusually cold winter, a growing number of people are heading to Southeast Asian destinations like Thailand and the Philippines to enjoy some sunshine.
Hana Tour said on Thursday that 45.9 percent of the 140,000 Korean tourists who headed abroad last month through the company went to Southeast Asia, marking a 47.1 percentage point increase from the same period of 2011. The next most popular destinations were Europe (31.4 percent) and North America (11.5 percent), it said.
Mode Tour said 52.4 percent of the 73,400 tourists who traveled abroad last month through the company picked destinations in Southeast Asia, up 27 percentage points.
Travel agencies attributed both the cold snap and the increased availability of affordable carriers as the main reasons.
