FC Augsburg midfielder Koo Ja-cheol appeared on the runway of the 11th Fighter Squadron in Daegu with a red scarf around his neck instead of the uniform of the Korean national football team on Wednesday and boarded one of the Air Force's F-15Ks to enjoy a brief taste of life as an elite fighter jet pilot.
The F-15K carrying Koo did not take off, but ran along the runway at 250 km/h, the speed a jet hits just prior to leaving the ground. Koo, who spent about 10 minutes in the aircraft, said he was "overwhelmed at getting the chance to have such a privileged experience. I was so thrilled to just look through the cockpit as the jet sped along. Hopefully I'll get a chance to see what it's like to take off next time."
Koo was appointed as an honorary ambassador for the Korean Air Force in August immediately after helping the national team win a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics. His father worked as a mechanic for the Air Force for 23 years.
