KakaoTalk, the free mobile messaging app, recorded 70 million subscribers in Korea and overseas recently, 1,000 days after it was launched in March 2010, Kakao said on Sunday. The number has grown steadily from 10 million in July last year to 60 million this September.
Each subscriber spent 43 minutes a day on average using the service, up from 25 minutes in July. An average 27 million people use the service a day, sending a total of 4.2 billion messages. KakaoTalk generates revenue from mobile content such as games.
The service is currently available in 13 languages including Korean, English, Japanese, Chinese, Spanish, German, French, Portuguese, Italian, Turkish, Thai, Indonesian and Vietnamese. It also supports various operating systems such as Android, Apple iOS, Windows, Samsung Bada and BlackBerry.
