Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery earned himself a red card by slapping Augsburg midfielder Koo Ja-cheol in the face in the wake of some fierce physical tussling in their round-of-16 match during the DFB-Pokal Cup in Augsburg on Wednesday (Korean time).
They clashed minutes after the break as midfielder Koo, covering the right wing, and left winger Ribery fought for control on both ends of the pitch.
Frustrated when Koo won the ball from him near the halfway line, Ribery kicked the player's left shin from behind and Koo fell to the ground. The Korean sprang to feet, shoved the Frenchman in the chest and waved his finger in his face, and Ribery reacted by giving him a slap on the right cheek, resulting in his dismissal. Koo was also given a yellow card.
Augsburg, which surrendered the opening goal to Bayern in the first half, gained a one-man advantage but allowed another goal to Xherdan Shaqiri in the 85th minute. Ribery has a reputation for his aggressive performances on the pitch, even striking teammate Arjen Robben in the face during halftime of a UEFA Champions' League semifinal against Real Madrid in April.
