Former independent presidential contender Ahn Cheol-soo met on Thursday afternoon with the Democratic United Party's candidate Moon Jae-in and agreed to support his campaign. The move came 13 days after Ahn abruptly withdrew from the race, apparently because he was upset by what he regarded as underhand tactics from Moon's camp in an attempt to field a single opposition candidate.
Moon spoke with reporters after the meeting and said Ahn "told me he would offer his full support." He added, "Now I believe all of the people who hope for a change in leadership and political reform will support us."
Until now, there were concerns that both Moon and Ahn running for the presidency could split valuable votes, giving conservative Saenuri Party candidate Park Geun-hye an advantage.
The spokesmen for both camps announced a set of agreements in the election campaign after Moon and Ahn met. The meeting came about after Ahn telephoned Moon at around 1 p.m. offering his support.
Earlier, Ahn said through his spokesman Yoo Min-young that "I decided to support Moon so that he can win the election." Ahn added, "There are no preconditions to my support."
