The campaign camp for independent presidential candidate Ahn Cheol-soo has called off talks with Democratic United Party hopeful Moon Jae-in about fielding a single candidate.
Ahn's campaign chief Park Sun-sook told reporters that senior officials from the DUP camp made "statements that were not based on facts," which she said would hurt the prospects of a cordial merger of the camps.
The Ahn camp is specifically upset about a rumor that Ahn would eventually step back in favor of Moon. It says it has complained about the rumor before and is now waiting for the DUP to respond.
Yoo Min-young, another Ahn spokesman, said the camp would be willing to return to the negotiation table once the DUP addresses the issue.
But Yoo added that other talks about a unified line on political reform will continue as scheduled. A day earlier, the two campaign camps took the first step toward unity by completing a preliminary draft of a joint statement on political reform.
