The world population has surpassed 7.05 billion, up 78.1 million from 2011, according to a report by the UN Population Fund (UNFPA).
South Korea ranks as the 26th most populous country with 48.6 million people, but it would jump to 19th with 73.2 million if combined with North Korea.
China has the most people, with a population of 1.35 billion, followed by India's 1.26 billion and the U.S. with 316 million. Tuvalu has the smallest population, with just 9,867 people living within its coastal borders.
Meanwhile, the global fertility rate from 2010 to 2015 was projected to stand at 2.5, unchanged from last year. However the rate for Korea, which is dealing with a rapidly graying society, was much lower at 1.4 this year, the fifth-lowest rate among 189 countries.
