One in 10 married couples in Seoul live apart. The proportion of non-cohabitating couples rose from 5.8 percent of all married couples in 1995 to 9.5 percent in 2010.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government on Thursday said the number rose from 131,000 households in 1995 to 211,000 in 2010, up a whopping 61.1 percent.
Meanwhile, as the numbers of divorced couples and singles increased, the proportion of households led by a married couple fell from 76.6 percent in 1995 to 63.4 percent in 2010.
The proportion of women between 25 and 29 who are single doubled from 40.1 percent in 1995 to 80.2 percent in 2010, and that of single men between 30 and 34 rose from 24.4 percent to 58.9 percent over the same period.
The number of people in their 30s who still live with their parents rose from 93,559 in 1995 to 322,313 in 2010. The divorce rate among Seoul citizens rose from 2.6 percent in 1995 to 7.4 percent in 2010.
