Korea Urges China to Crack Down on Illegal Fishing

South Korea has urged China to crack down on Chinese trawlers illegally fishing in waters near the Northern Limit Line, the de facto maritime border between two Koreas.

The Foreign Ministry on Wednesday said it told the Chinese Embassy that South Korean fishermen are suffering serious damage from the illegal operations of Chinese fishing boats in the West Sea. It urged China to eradicate illegal fishing.

The ministry said illegal fishing also spells trouble in terms of national security.

The Chinese Embassy said Beijing is doing what it can to stop illegal fishing and has instructed local governments to do their utmost to crack down.

But most of the trawlers are unregistered and therefore difficult to track.
