Over 20,000 youngsters in Gyeonggi Province may be at risk of addiction to their smartphones, a poll suggests. One in every 10 students in the poll said they use their smartphone for over five hours a day.
The Gyeonggi Education Office surveyed 1.45 million primary and secondary school students in the province last month and released the findings on Wednesday. Some 66 percent said they carry a smartphone, and 45 percent of them use the device for one to three hours a day on average. Some 27 percent spend less than one hour a day using the gadget, but 18 percent use it for three to five hours. The proportion using it for more than five hours amounted to 10 percent.
Some 2.2 percent or 21,001 students have been categorized as developing an addiction to smartphone use. They maintain social interaction by smartphone alone and are unable to go without the device, even for a moment.
In a multiple-answer questionnaire, students replied that they use the device largely to chat via apps (74 percent), followed by making calls or texting (67 percent), listening to music (64 percent), searching for information (54 percent), and playing games (52 percent).
